Hermaphroditism refers in humans to the presence of multiple genitalia usually exclusive to a single gender. Hermaphroditism in non-human species is much broader in classification.

Many fish have the capability of switching gender and size multiple times throughout their lifespan as necessary. It serves as a balancing mechanism, ensuring that fish of specific genders, sizes, and dominance level are in a certain proportion.

Clownfish, for instance, live on anemones in sets of up to 6. A dominant female is the largest, and she breeds exclusively with the next largest male, about 80% her size. The ladder goes down by a similar margin in size with males and females in direct proportion.
As gaps occur, clownfish climb the social ladder and change in sex and gender as appropriate. That is, with the death of the dominant female, the male may grow to her size and convert to female.

By extension, merfolk, not existing aside, could have the inherent ability to possess one or both sets of genitalia at any given time, and change them at will. Then, there would be nothing special about it at all, with the inconsistency merely resulting from trying to apply biologically human concepts to other creature.
What you'll find, though, is that hermaphroditism doesn't normally occur in complex creature, and is almost always the result of abnormality or defect. So, it's unlikely that merfolk, typically being portrayed as highly advanced creatures, would have naturally occurring hermaphroditism.

Therefore, my guess is... *drum roll*
Dead.

Every account I've heard of merfolk typically portray them as xenophobic and rigid, ignoring Disney. I would imagine hermaphrodites in merfolk societies would be killed or exiled for being abnormal, and their existence struck from records.

Did you know that a few decades ago, in the US, hermaphroditism was dealt with through sex assignment surgery immediately at birth, followed by a sealing of the records to protect the child? For all intents and purposes, the phenomena did not occur in humans because we said it didn't occur.

That's what I think you'd find in merfolk.

Alternatively, go with the mermaphrodite.

It's almost finals time for the Fall semester, so I'm following the ancient college traditions of doing everything but studying. <_<

Very Interesting Mercury Angel, I still don't get the whole Mermaider thing, so explain it to me. And Mercury Angel, are you one of them that was a hermaphrodite? jk man. Shemermale is good, and so is Merdudette, Very Origional.

Now come on people, come up with your own origional ideas. I want variety.

MerHeShe

derived from "heshe" (he-she) which is what I hear some call transexuals and girly men.
